Maradona Adjei Yeboah, popularly known as Guru, has emerged victorious in the highly contested University of Ghana Student Representative Council (UG-SRC) presidential race for the 2024/2025 academic year. The election, held on Thursday, September 18, 2024, featured five candidates vying for the top student leadership position.
According to the Voice of Legon, Guru, along with his running mate Jeffery Adu-Yeboah, secured a total of 9,455 votes out of 18,659 votes cast. This gave them a narrow majority, representing 50.6 percent of the total votes.
It is important to note that, earlier in the campaign, the University of Ghana SRC’s vetting committee disqualified Guru and his running mate. The reason for the disqualification was that they allegedly failed to meet certain constitutional requirements outlined in the SRC’s regulations. This setback initially threw their campaign into disarray, casting doubt on their ability to participate in the election.
Nevertheless, Guru and his team remained resolute and opted to appeal the decision. Their appeal was heard by the university’s appeals board, and on September 15, 2024, the board upheld the appeal, reversing the disqualification. This reinstated Guru and his running mate into the race, allowing them to continue their campaign just days before the elections.
Guru and his team intensified their efforts, reaching out to students across campus. Their message of leadership, student welfare, and inclusivity resonated with a significant portion of the student body, ultimately leading to their election as the new SRC executives.
As the president-elect, Guru is expected to bring his campaign promises to life, focusing on addressing students’ concerns and fostering unity within the university community.
