In his opening remarks to the Committee, Mr. Justin Kodua Frimpong, the General Secretary of the NPP, commended the National Peace Council for their unwavering commitment to fostering democracy in Ghana. He highlighted their relentless advocacy for peace, which has played a crucial role in the nation’s democratic development.

Alhaji Bin Salih Mauvi, the Chairman of the Committee, acknowledged the efforts of both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in disbanding their vigilante groups. However, he stressed that more needs to be done by both parties to ensure peace before, during, and after the 2024 general elections. He expressed particular concern over the increasing use of inflammatory and incendiary language by politicians on radio and at campaign events, which he warned could destabilize the country.

Alhaji Mauvi urged all political parties to act as ambassadors for peace by discouraging their members from engaging in violence and intimidation as the elections approach.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Kodua Frimpong reiterated that since Ghana’s return to democracy in 1992, the NPP has consistently advocated for peace. He pointed out that even in instances where the Party had legitimate concerns about electoral processes and outcomes, they chose to push for reforms rather than resort to violence, which could have jeopardized the country’s peace and security.

Mr. Kodua Frimpong assured the Committee that the NPP is fully committed to the peaceful conduct of the 2024 elections and will respect the outcome, whether in victory or defeat. However, he cautioned that while the Party is dedicated to maintaining peace, it will not succumb to intimidation by any political party. He called on other political parties to demonstrate their commitment to peace by signing the Peace Accord for the 2024 general elections.
