The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has elected Lawyer Prosper Tachie as its new National President, marking a significant leadership transition for the country’s oldest and largest teachers’ union.
The election was held during the 2026 7th Quadrennial 54th National Delegates Conference, hosted at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). Delegates from across the country converged at the conference to deliberate on key issues affecting teachers and to elect national officers to steer the affairs of the association for the next four years.
According to reports, Lawyer Prosper Tachie secured 61.7 per cent of the total valid votes cast, emerging as the candidate with the highest number of votes among all contestants. His decisive victory reflects the confidence reposed in him by delegates and members of the association nationwide. Rev. Isaac Owusu had 37.8 percent and Charles K. Amponsah had 2.8 percent.

Prior to his election as National President, Lawyer Prosper Tachie served as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of GNAT, where he was credited with effective leadership, strong advocacy, and commitment to protecting the welfare of teachers. His experience at the regional level is expected to positively influence his national leadership.
Several stakeholders within the education sector and members of GNAT have described his election as timely and strategic, noting that having a lawyer at the helm of the union is crucial. They believe his legal expertise will strengthen negotiations, enhance policy engagement, and help secure better working conditions and outcomes for teachers across Ghana.
