President Mahama Orders Immediate Restoration of Broadcast for 64 Suspended Radio Stations

President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the National Communications Authority (NCA) to immediately reinstate the broadcast authorisations of 64 radio stations whose operations were recently suspended due to regulatory infractions.

The directive comes just days after the NCA issued a shutdown order for the stations, citing expired licences and breaches of broadcasting regulations. President Mahama, however, emphasised the importance of balancing regulatory enforcement with democratic principles.

“While we respect the need for compliance, media pluralism and access to information must not be compromised,” the President stated.

He further called on the NCA to engage with the affected media houses to resolve any outstanding issues transparently and constructively, adding that any future actions should follow clearly communicated timelines, notices, and a fair hearing process.

The suspension of the radio stations had sparked concerns from civil society groups, media advocates, and segments of the public, who questioned the timing and scale of the enforcement.

President Mahama’s directive has been welcomed by many as a step toward strengthening press freedom and reinforcing the vital role of independent media in Ghana’s democracy.
