Cristiano Ronaldo has once again has come to Portugal’s rescue, netting a late goal to secure a 2-1 victory over Scotland in the Nations League on Sunday. The 39-year-old football legend scored his 901st career goal to cap a dramatic comeback after the Scots had taken an early lead.
Scotland, hoping to end their winless streak against Portugal, shocked the home crowd at Lisbon’s Estadio da Luz with a seventh-minute goal. Manchester United’s Scott McTominay sent the travelling fans into celebration after heading in a pinpoint cross from Kenny McLean.
Portugal, determined to maintain their perfect start to the tournament, launched relentless attacks. Scotland’s goalkeeper, Angus Gunn, stood firm, making a string of outstanding saves, including a low drive from Rafael Leão that looked destined for the back of the net. Despite 15 attempts on goal in the first half, Portugal went into the break trailing.
It was only in the 54th minute that Bruno Fernandes found a way past Gunn, firing a shot that the keeper perhaps should have saved. As time ticked on, Scotland clung to hope, but Portugal kept up the pressure. João Félix had two close chances saved by Gunn, and Ronaldo even hit the post.
Then, in the 88th minute, Nuno Mendes delivered a wicked cross, and Ronaldo was on hand for a simple tap-in, sealing the comeback for Portugal. The Scots were left heartbroken, their winless streak now stretching to eight competitive matches. Scotland has now conceded late goals in five of their last six games across all competitions.
With the victory, Portugal leads League A Group 1 with six points, having also defeated Croatia earlier. Croatia sits second after beating Poland, leaving Scotland still searching for their first points.
