Mr. Hage Geingob, the president of Namibia has been reported to have died on Sunday, 4th February, 2024 at age 82. Mr. Geingob was diagnosed of cancer and he was sent to USA for treatment.

Reports gathered indicate that his office agreed to send him to the US for treatment because the sickness had persisted for a while, with the intention of returning to the office by February 2, 2024. However, Mr. Geingob could not return on the specified date as he was still unwell.

Mr. Hage Geingob, born in 1941, is one of Namibia’s prominent politicians. Before Namibia gained independence, he chaired the committee that drafted the country’s constitution. He assumed the position of the first prime minister upon independence on March 21, 1990, and held the position until 2002.

He also served as Namibia’s Minister of Trade and Industry before reassuming the position of Prime Minister in 2012.

Mr. Geingob assumed the role of Vice President to Mr. Hifikepunye Pohamba of the ruling South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) in 2007. Remarkably, SWAPO has retained power in Namibia since gaining independence.

In 2014, Mr. Hage Geingob ran as the presidential candidate for SWAPO and secured victory with a substantial margin, earning about 87% of the total votes cast. Mr. Geingob, representing the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO), officially assumed the presidency in 2015. He has been in office since 2015 and is currently serving his second term, set to conclude in November 2024. The nation was in the midst of preparing for the election of a new president when it was unexpectedly shaken by the sudden death of the incumbent president.

As a patriotic citizen and the president of Namibia, he consistently fought against the concentration of the country’s wealth in the hands of the whites. He also made a significant move by compelling white business owners to sell approximately 25% of their businesses to black Namibians, aiming to empower the Namibian citizenry in the business sector.

Mr. Geingob has been a resilient member and president in the fight for Namibia’s independence. He will always be remembered for his achievements and efforts toward the betterment of Namibia and the African continent as a whole.

The Vice President, Mr. Nangolo Mbumba, has assumed the role of Acting President for Namibia until the election in November 2024 to select a new president.

Gh Educate extends its best wishes to the family and the entire nation of Namibia.
