Minority Calls for Suspension of GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi Over Viral Dollar-Gift Scandal

Ghana’s parliamentary Minority has called for the immediate suspension and investigation of Sammy Gyamfi, Acting Chief Executive of the Ghana Gold Board, following a viral video that shows him gifting a bundle of US dollar notes to controversial preacher Nana Agradaa.

The video, which has sparked public outcry, shows Mr. Gyamfi handing the cash to the evangelist during what he later described as a “personal act of kindness.” However, opposition MPs argue the act breaches multiple public ethics and finance laws.

At a press briefing in Accra, Dr. Kabiru Tia Mahama, MP for Walewale, said Mr. Gyamfi’s gesture contravenes the Code of Conduct for Public Officials, the Foreign Exchange Act, and the Currency Act.

“The Minority is calling for the immediate suspension of Sammy Gyamfi,” Dr. Mahama said. “This goes against the law, and as a lawyer, he should know better.”

The opposition also demanded a full investigation into the source of the foreign currency seen in the video, questioning whether public funds might have been involved.

Mr. Gyamfi, who is also the National Communications Officer of the ruling NDC party, has since apologised, saying he had no intention for the moment to become public.

“I sincerely thought that I was doing this act of kindness in private and never imagined that same could find its way into the public space,” he posted on social media.

The Chief of Staff has reportedly summoned Mr. Gyamfi for questioning, amid concerns that the incident undermines President John Mahama’s new Code of Conduct for Public Officials, which stresses humility, transparency and accountability in public life.
