John Dramani Mahama, former president of the Republic of Ghana and the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has openly declared his stance against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+). The flagbearer of the NDC made this statement on Wednesday, 31st January, 2024 as part of his Building Ghana We Want Together tour in the Eastern region of Ghana.

Mr. Mahama categorically stated that a man is a man, and a woman is a woman; individuals cannot simply choose their gender contrary to nature’s plan for humanity. God actually had a purpose in creating both man and woman. He continued by saying that as a member of the Assemblies of God, I adhere to a faith that does not endorse LGBTQ relationships, where individuals of the same gender engage in romantic relationships. This belief extends from the traditional understanding of gender roles,” declared Mahama.

Mr. John Mahama stated that Ghana, like many African countries, could draw inspiration from Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, who signed one of the world’s most stringent anti-LGBTQ laws, imposing the death penalty for ‘aggravated homosexuality.’ In response, he criticized the current president, His Excellency Nana Akuffo-Addo, for not taking a decisive stance on this controversial issue. Mr. Mahama further emphasized the need for expeditious action by the designated committee responsible for reviewing this matter to hasten the signing of the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill. He expressed concern that the bill’s passage has been significantly delayed since 2021.

He reiterated the importance of parliamentary involvement, emphasizing that legislators must contribute to ensuring the actualization of this bill’s passage. He holds a strong conviction that while not all parliamentary candidates endorse the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, a substantial majority opposes the issue.

The Christian and Muslim communities in the country have vehemently voiced their opposition to this phenomenon, deeming it as irreligious and contrary to the ethics and standards of living. Traditional leaders are also vocal in their disapproval of the LGBTQ issue. Many human rights activists are closely monitoring this matter and eagerly anticipating the passage of the Anti-LGBTQ bill as law in the country.

The LGBTQ debate in Ghana has been marked by considerable contention, reflecting diverse perspectives on the matter. Mahama’s steadfast position aligns closely with a substantial segment of the population that adheres to traditional and conservative views on gender and sexual related issues. His statement elicited great applause from the audience, signaling a clear alignment of his stance with those in attendance.
