The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has issued a press release addressing the handling of votes cast for the late Madam Akua Donkor, leader of the Ghana Freedom Party, in the upcoming 2024 Presidential elections.
The announcement follows the unfortunate passing of Madam Akua Donkor, whose image and party logo remain on the 2024 Presidential Ballot Paper.
The press release clarified that all votes cast in favor of Madam Akua Donkor will be classified as Rejected Ballots. Consequently, these votes will not be included in the tally of Valid Votes Cast. The Commission emphasized that this decision is in line with electoral laws and procedures to ensure transparency and accuracy during the election process.
To maintain fairness and avoid confusion, the EC has communicated this directive to its permanent and temporary staff, as well as agents representing all Presidential Candidates. The Commission also urged the general public to take note of this clarification to ensure that voters are informed ahead of the polls.
The EC reiterated its commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections in the 2024 general elections. It encouraged all stakeholders, including political parties and their supporters, to adhere to the guidelines and work towards a peaceful and orderly electoral process.
