Hon. Haruna Iddris, the Education Minister Proposes Task Force for Sanitary Pad Disposal in Schools

The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed plans to set up a dedicated task force to oversee the safe and environmentally responsible disposal of sanitary pads in schools across the country.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, June 18, during a meeting with the UNFPA Country Representative, Dr. Wilfred Ochan, where both parties reaffirmed their shared commitment to improving health and well-being education for Ghanaian learners.

The Minister emphasised that menstrual hygiene must not only be addressed through access to sanitary products but also through proper education and disposal practices that protect the health of young girls and the environment.

“We owe it to our girls to provide a safe and dignified school experience, one that respects their health, their education, and their environment,” Hon. Haruna Iddrisu.

According to the Minister, the task force to be established in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, will be responsible for developing and implementing long-term strategies for sanitary waste disposal, particularly in underserved communities.

The meeting also explored new initiatives to promote health and well-being education in schools, focusing on hygiene, reproductive health, and environmental awareness. The Minister shared his intention to collaborate with UNFPA to pilot digital learning models in selected schools as part of a broader effort to enhance access to quality health education.

Dr. Ochan welcomed the proposals and assured the Minister of UNFPA’s continued support in building resilient, inclusive, and health-conscious school systems in Ghana.
