On Monday, February 3, 2025, the Ghana Police Service announced the arrest of Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awuah, former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations and Member of Parliament for Sunyani West, along with two others, in connection with the sudden passing of Nana Pooley during a league match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
The violent incident occurred at the Nana Koramansah Park in Nsoatre and tragically led to the death of Francis Frimpong, a well-known Asante Kotoko supporter popularly known as Nana Pooley.
According to a police statement, the three suspects – Ignatius Baffour Awuah, owner of Nsoatreman FC and former MP and Minister; Agyemang Duah Owusu; and Kyeremeh Joseph – are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
A search of Agyemang Duah Owusu’s residence led to the discovery of two dresses with suspected bloodstains and an MP-23 pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, as revealed in the police report.
Inspector-General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has personally reached out to the bereaved family and the leadership of Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC, offering condolences on behalf of the Ghana Police Service and assuring them of a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
To ensure a swift and comprehensive probe, a special team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters has been deployed to support the Bono Regional Police Command in its investigations.
The Ghana Police Service has urged the general public to remain calm as they work diligently to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
