The Acting Vice-Chancellor of University of Cape Coast Warns Halls Against Violence, Threatens Dismissal

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto, has issued a strong warning to university halls of residence against confrontations and clashes on campus, stating that any student found culpable will face dismissal.

Professor Aheto’s caution follows growing concerns over rising tensions linked to hall rivalries and student activities, which university authorities say threaten peace, safety and the academic environment of the institution.

Professor Aheto delivered the warning during the matriculation ceremony for fresh students, using the occasion to underline the university’s firm stance on discipline, safety and responsible student conduct from the very beginning of their academic journey.

He further revealed that last year, the university spent significant financial resources to deploy security personnel to contain tensions and restore calm following clashes on campus, describing the situation as avoidable and regrettable. According to him, such funds should have been channelled into academic development rather than emergency security interventions.

Professor Aheto stressed that universities exist primarily for teaching, learning and research, and any behaviour that undermines these core objectives will be dealt with decisively. He noted that tradition, hall pride or popularity cannot be used as justification for misconduct.

University management, he added, remains committed to enforcing UCC’s statutes and code of conduct, urging students to resolve grievances through dialogue, established procedures and responsible leadership rather than confrontation.

He also called on hall executives and student leaders to take responsibility for maintaining order, reminding them that leadership comes with accountability and consequences.

The warning has been widely interpreted as a clear signal of the university’s determination to maintain discipline and preserve UCC’s reputation as a centre of academic excellence.
