THE GES
The Ghana Education Service, abbreviated as the GES is one of the agencies or public services under the Ministry of Education in Ghana.
The GES was established, as part of the Public Service of Ghana, in 1974 by the National Redemption Council Degree, NRCD 247. Later it was amended by NRC Degree 252. Another amendment was done by the NRC Degree 357 and also the Supreme Military Council Degree (SMCD 63).
Under the forth Republican Constitution of Ghana, these earlier legislations have been amended by Acts of Parliament, including Act 506 (1995) and Act 778 (2008). The latest amendment is seen in the Pre-Tertiary Education (Act 2020), Act 1049 section 6(1) which establishes the Education Service as a body corporate.
It has its headquarters in Accra. Apart from the Accra Head Office, GES has other directorates including Regional Offices and District/Municipal/Metro Offices spread across the country that support its smooth operations.
There are also Regional Unit offices. Their responsibility is to supervise the Unit Schools under their denominations. These are schools which have been established by both Christian and Muslim missions in each region of Ghana. They include Islamic schools, Ahmadiyya schools, Catholic schools, Anglican schools, Presbyterian schools, AME Zion schools etc.
It is the responsibility of the GES to ensure that all assets/properties of service (office buildings, vehicles, school buildings, lands, furniture, bungalows, staff, and all other properties) are taken good care of.
LEADERSHIP OF THE GES
The GES is headed by the Director-General of the Education Service.
The Current Director General is Dr. Eric Nkansah. He has two deputies;
- Deputy Director-General (Management Services), currently Mr. Stephen Kwaku Owusu
2. Deputy Director-General (Quality and Access) currently Dr. Kwabena Bempah Tandoh
These 3 persons are all appointed directly by the President in accordance with article 195 of Ghana’s constitution.
Their terms of office is 4 years. After the 4 years, they are eligible for another 4 year-term only.
