The GES Council

The Ghana Education Service Council was formed by the Ghana Education Service Act (Act 506 of 1995) as the Service’s governing body. It functions as a link between the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Office.

Members are appointed by the President in consultation with the Council of State. Members hold office for a term of 3 years and may be re-appointed for a second term only.

The Chairman of the GES Council, Mr. Michael Kenneth Nsowah was appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo and was sworn in by the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

Functions of the GES Council

The Council manages the Service, thus, the Council:

  • Ensures the implementation of the functions of the Service.
  • Promotes collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the Service
  • Submits to the Minister of Education recommendations for pre-tertiary educational policies and programmes.
  • Organises promotion interviews for the grades of Assistant Director II, I, Deputy Director, Director II, I, Deputy Director-General and Director-General of the Service.
  • Handles disputes and grievances referred to it;
  • Appoints District Education Oversight Committees to assist the Council in discharge of its functions.
  • Approves retirement from the Service arising out of incapacitation after a report from a medical board.
