The National Teaching Council Hosts the Sierra Leone Teaching Service Commission in Ghana

The National Teaching Council (NTC) hosted a high-level delegation from the Sierra Leone Teaching Service Commission from Monday, February 3, 2025, to Friday, February 7, 2025. The visit aimed to foster collaboration and facilitate knowledge-sharing on teacher professionalism, licensing, and continuous professional development (CPD) between the two countries.

The Sierra Leone Teaching Service Commission delegation was warmly received by Dr. Christian Addai Poku, the Registrar of the National Teaching Council, along with the management team of the NTC. The delegation comprised the following key representatives:

  1. Lans Keifala – Chair of the Commission
  2. Sorie Ibrahim Turay – Secretary to the Commission
  3. Edwin K. Massaquoi – Director of Corporate Services
  4. Hectora Pyne-Bailey – Director, Teacher Registration and Licensing
  5. Samuel N.P. Johnson – Deputy Director, Registration and Licensing
  6. Ezekiel Nonie – Manager, Teacher Performance
  7. Dr. Dennis S. Luseni – Component Coordinator of the Free Education Project

According to reports, the primary objective of the visit was to study Ghana’s legal and institutional frameworks in the education sector. The delegation sought to gain insight into the country’s teacher professionalism processes, with a specific focus on the teacher licensing system and CPD framework. Additionally, they aimed to understand the critical infrastructure necessary for implementing an effective teacher licensing system while establishing professional linkages with Ghanaian educational institutions.

During the engagement, Dr. Christian Addai Poku, who led the management team of NTC, provided an extensive presentation on the Council’s journey since its establishment in 2017. He highlighted key transformational policies introduced to regulate the teaching profession and ensure high standards in teacher education and practice. His presentation highlighted the strides Ghana has made in professionalizing teaching through licensing, certification, and continuous capacity-building programs.

As part of their visit, the delegation also paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu. During the meeting, both parties engaged in a discussion on the growth and development of the educational systems of Ghana and Sierra Leone. The conversation provided an opportunity for cross-learning, particularly on the implementation of teacher development policies in both nations.

Hon. Haruna Iddrisu took the opportunity to engage Mr. Lans Keifala, the Chairman of the Sierra Leone Teaching Service Commission, and Dr. Dennis Luseni on the Free Education Project in Sierra Leone. The discussions revolved around its implementation framework, challenges, and successes.

The Minister also inquired about best practices that Ghana could adopt from Sierra Leone’s experience and, in turn, shared insights from Ghana’s educational reforms.
