Teacher, Two University Students Sentenced To 20 Months Imprisonment Over WASSCE Malpractices

A teacher and two university students have been sentenced to a total of 20 months’ imprisonment for their roles in examination malpractice during the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The Ofaakor District Magistrate Court in Kasoa handed down the sentences after finding the three guilty of cheating offences that undermined the credibility of the national exam.

The convicts include Samuel Armah, a teacher at Ghana College SHS, who was caught with leaked Social Studies Paper 1 answers on his mobile phone. He was reported to have dictated the answers to candidates while invigilating. He was fined 80 penalty units and sentenced to eight months in prison.

Two university students, Kwame Oteng Nkansah, a Level 100 student of Accra Technical University, and Amedeka James, a Level 100 student of the University of Ghana, were also jailed for impersonation. Nkansah posed as Quayson Francis Atta of Ghana College SHS, while James impersonated his twin brother, Amedeka Justice, during the Social Studies paper. Each was fined 80 penalty units and sentenced to six months in prison.

The court said the verdict was necessary to protect the integrity of Ghana’s education system and serve as a deterrent to others.

Reacting to the development, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Seth Sabah Sewornoo-Banini, who had earlier paid unannounced visits to some examination centres, admitted that lapses such as congestion and poor seating arrangements had been identified. He assured that corrective measures would be taken to ensure smooth conduct of the remaining papers.

The Municipal Education Director, Mr. Frank-Etrue Hayford, also condemned the malpractice incidents, stressing that the Directorate remained committed to safeguarding the integrity of the examination process and upholding fairness for all candidates.
