Teacher Blinded in Student Attack Left Without Support, Family Appeals for Help

Mr. Ishmael Famous, a Visual Arts teacher at Asuoso Senior High School, has been left blind in his left eye after being violently attacked by a student in November 2024.

According to eyewitnesses, the student used a cutter knife to inflict the injury during an altercation, resulting in the permanent loss of vision in one eye. Mr. Famous has since been unable to return to the classroom and is now confined to his home.

Despite the seriousness of the incident, there has been no official statement or support from key education authorities including the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), or the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT-GH).

“He cannot walk to the bathroom without help, and no one has come to his aid. His partner is overwhelmed, and the emotional and financial burden is becoming unbearable,” a close family source told reporters.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident in April 2025, a student from Bantama Adventist SHS in Kumasi, Suzy Adwoa Pinamang, suffered a serious eye injury. Unlike Mr. Famous, she was airlifted to the UK for treatment through the support of businessman Ibrahim Mahama.

Mr. Famous’ family is calling on the general public and philanthropic individuals to support his recovery. They also expressed frustration that the family of the student responsible for the attack has not shown concern.

Calls are growing for urgent action to address violence in schools and provide adequate protection and welfare for teachers across the country.
