The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed Sixteen people, including twelve invigilators and a supervisor and other individuals have been arrested across the country for engaging in examination malpractices during the ongoing 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, disclosed that the individuals were apprehended for various forms of misconduct aimed at compromising the integrity of the exams. The arrests include three unrelated individuals, one of whom was reportedly caught with photocopied answers disguised as sewing patterns, claiming to be a fashion designer.
“As of this morning, we’ve hit 16 so far — 12 invigilators, one supervisor and three individuals who were not directly connected to the examination,” Mr Kapi said.
The infractions ranged from photographing question papers to dictating answers during the exams and leaking materials to third parties outside the examination centres.
WAEC noted with concern that some invigilators had gone as far as facilitating external assistance for candidates, a move the Council says undermines public confidence in the examination process. One of the incidents involved an attempted assault on a WAEC monitor who was working to prevent exam fraud.
Mr Kapi emphasized, WAEC has handed all suspects over to law enforcement and vowed that all those found guilty will face legal consequences.
The Council has urged school authorities and examination personnel to uphold professionalism and protect the credibility of this national examination.
