President Mahama’s Appointees Who Failed to Declare Assets Face Salary Sanctions

President John Dramani Mahama has ordered that government appointees who failed to meet the March 31 deadline for asset declaration will forfeit three months’ salary.

The penalty, according to the Presidency, is in line with efforts to strengthen accountability and transparency in public office. The deducted salaries will be donated to the newly launched Ghana Medical Trust Fund, known as Mahama Cares, which supports patients with chronic and life-threatening illnesses such as kidney failure, cancer and heart disease.

A total of 55 officials, including deputy and regional ministers, are affected by the directive.

President Mahama had earlier pledged six months of his own salary to the Fund, and urged corporate Ghana to also contribute as part of their social responsibility.

“This measure sends a clear signal that ethical conduct and accountability are non-negotiable values in this administration,” a statement from the Presidency said.

The Ghana Medical Trust Fund was launched in April 2025 as part of the government’s broader efforts to improve access to healthcare for vulnerable citizens.
