President John Dramani Mahama has announced that July 1, traditionally observed as Republic Day in Ghana, will now be designated as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving. This initiative aims to provide Ghanaians with an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s progress and express gratitude, aligning with the principle of giving thanks in all circumstances.
To facilitate the observance, President Mahama has proposed the reinstatement of July 1 as a statutory public holiday. He indicated that amendments to the Public Holidays Act will be presented to Parliament to formalize this change.
Additionally, the President announced plans to establish a planning committee comprising religious leaders to oversee the organization of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.
President Mahama emphasized the importance of this day as a moment for national reflection and unity, stating, “We will have the opportunity as a nation soon to pray and give thanks to the Almighty God, as enjoined by the Holy Book that says, ‘In all things, give thanks.’”
The proposal also includes provisions for an additional public holiday to mark the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr, demonstrating the government’s commitment to inclusivity and recognition of Ghana’s diverse religious landscape.
