The Police Council has recommended to President John Dramani Mahama a two-year contract extension for the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, ahead of his mandatory retirement in December 2025.

According to reports, the proposal has already been submitted to President Mahama for his approval.

If President Mahama, after consultation with the Council of State, endorses the extension, it will allow IGP Yohuno to continue serving as the head of the Ghana Police Service as the institution advances ongoing reforms and critical national security operations.

It is important to note that Mr. Yohuno was appointed IGP by President Mahama, in consultation with the Council of State, on March 13, 2025, and was sworn in to replace Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
