Ghana has launched a national digital literacy project dubbed “Smart Schools Project”.

A groundbreaking move towards modernizing education in Ghana has seen the President of the West African nation launch a much welcoming Smart Schools Project Friday, March 25th, 2024.

The event which took place at the prestigious Accra Conference Center, was graced by the presence of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo-Addo, the President of Ghana, who personally inaugurated the initiative. Joining him was His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President, affectionately known as the “Digital Bawumia” for his pioneering role in advancing technology in the country.

Also in attendance were Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum, the honorable minister for education who is more or less the arrow head spearheading the reform of Ghana’s education, and host of the launch.

The Smart Schools Project is an extension of the government of Ghana’s Free SHS and TVET digitization agenda to transform Ghana’s economy by equipping Ghanaian students with 21st-century learning opportunities for them to be able to compete globally.

The Smart Schools Project will serves as Ghana’s transformative vision to equip students in all senior high schools with cutting-edge technology. At the center of this vision are bespoke tablets loaded with interactive learning materials, designed to empower students to engage with their studies in a 21st-century fashion. These tablets herald a new era of education, where traditional textbooks are supplemented by dynamic digital resources, enriching the learning experience and preparing students for success in an increasingly digital world.

According to the Minister, the Smart Schools Project goes beyond the mere provision of tablets. Recognizing the pivotal role of teachers in facilitating effective learning, the initiative includes comprehensive training programs to equip Teachers with the skills and knowledge needed to leverage these digital resources to enhance student learning outcomes.

Through ongoing support and professional development, teachers will be empowered to maximize the potential of technology in the classroom, fostering innovation and creativity among their students.

In addition to the state-of-the-art tablets, each student enrolled in the Smart Schools Project will receive a school bag, symbolizing the government’s commitment to ensuring that every aspect of their educational journey is supported and enhanced. These tangible investments reflect Ghana’s dedication to providing a world-class education system that empowers every student to reach their full potential.
