Miss Akyerema is a beauty pageant launched in 2023 by Nana Akosua Acheamaa Sikapa. The program is aimed at empowering young girls between the ages of 8 to 16 years from the Kumawu district.
The program focuses on instilling the rich Asante culture and traditions particularly those from the Kumawu district. It highlights aspects of the Akan and kumawu culture that are at risk of fading out of its importance which includes some traditional foods, clothing, funeral rites, puberty ceremonies, and the diverse roles of women in the past versus the present that has continuously diminishing its grounds.
The program’s goals are not only cultural preservation but also the development of confidence, values, and leadership qualities in the participants. In the heart of the program is the legacy of Nana Tweneboah Kodua, a significant historical figure who played a pivotal role in Kumawu’s victories in wars including the Asante-Denkyira war, and the war between the people of Kumawu and that of Afram Plains against Ataala Fiam the overlord, which led to the capture of Afram Plains stool lands and certain part of Volta region in respect of their victory.
Nana Tweneboah Kodua’s selflessness is the inspiration for the young girls in Miss Akyerema and they are encouraged to be committed to self devotion and service to their communities.
In the maiden edition of Miss Akyerema, Dei Pokua Hellen from Kumawu-Woraso, was crowned the queen in 2023 who was also a student of Woraso Presby JHS. This year’s edition started with 25 participants with 8 contestants currently remaining in the competition. The grand finale will take place at Kumawu-Bodomase on December 22, 2024. Miss Akyerema is not only aimed to nurture cultural pride but also promotes sex education and prepares the young contestants for leadership roles in their societies.
