The late Maame Akua Donkor, founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), corpse is scheduled to be laid to rest on March 29, 2025, in her hometown of Ejuratia, located in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti Region. Her passing on October 28, 2024, at the Ridge Hospital in Accra marked the end of a remarkable journey from cocoa farming to national politics.
Residents of Ejuratia have been mourning the loss of a leader who was deeply committed to the development of her community. During her tenure as an Assembly Member, Akua Donkor initiated several key projects, including the construction of an asphalt road, a bus station, and the refurbishment of the local school. Her efforts extended to neighboring communities where she provided essential amenities such as water, electricity, and educational facilities.
In recognition of her significant contributions, family members and local leaders are advocating for a state burial. Her daughter, Ama Serwaa Bonsu, emphasized, “My mother contributed significantly to the development of Ghana… I’m calling on the state to honour her by giving her a state burial.”
Akua Donkor’s political journey was characterized by resilience and a passion for representing ordinary Ghanaians. She established the Ghana Freedom Party in 2011 and, despite challenges, remained a steadfast advocate for women’s empowerment and youth development.
As preparations for her funeral proceed, the community reflects on her enduring legacy. The anticipated state recognition would not only honor her memory but also serve as an inspiration for future generations to engage in nation building and community service.
