Elon Musk’s satellite internet company, Starlink, is to officially begin operations in Ghana by the end of August 2024. The company is said to have successfully completed of all administrative and licensing procedures.
With this approval, Starlink is set to offer its high-speed internet services across the nation. Ghanaians are hoping to be handed a promising to revolution in digital infrastructure.
Even before receiving formal authorization, a number of tech-savvy Ghanaians had already found ways to access Starlink’s services through the black market. By subscribing to its global roaming service, they managed to bypass local restrictions. This shows the pent-up demand for reliable, fast internet in the country.
The tech giant’s presence in the country was confirmed by the National Communications Authority (NCA) of Ghana. The announcement, which was made by on Thursday, 22nd August, 2024 on its official X page affirmed that the service will be operated by Space X Starlink GH LTD, a subsidiary of Musk’s SpaceX.
Starlink’s approach to internet service delivery relies on a network of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, which offer far superior speeds compared to traditional satellite systems. This technological edge positions Starlink as a ‘dangerous’ competitor in the global internet market, capable of delivering download speeds exceeding 100 Mbps in certain areas.
As of April 2024, Starlink’s expansive network boasted approximately 5,800 LEO satellites, cementing its status as a leader in satellite internet technology. The official rollout in Ghana is expected to not only enhance connectivity but also drive competition within the local telecommunications sector, potentially lowering costs and improving service quality for consumers.
