Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, has inaugurated the Governing Board of the Ghana Scholarships Authority in line with Act 1149, approved by H.E. President John Dramani Mahama, marking a major step toward reforming Ghana’s scholarship administration system.

The Minister emphasized that scholarship awards must no longer be driven by individual discretion, nepotism, or partisan considerations. Instead, the mandate to award scholarships should now firmly rest with the Authority to ensure fairness, equity, and the national interest.

Hon. Iddrisu stated that the key criteria for scholarship awards must be on merit, genuine need, specific beneficiary categories, and national development priorities. He further appealed to the Authority to operate with the highest standards of accountability and transparency.

The Board is made up of representatives from key sector ministries, the Attorney-General’s Department, the Association of Ghana Industries, the Students Loan Fund, civil society organizations in education, the Authority’s Secretariat, and Presidential nominees.

The Chairperson expressed appreciation to the President and the Minister for the opportunity to serve, assuring that the Authority has entered a new era focused on ethical leadership, competence, and strategic investment in Ghana’s youth.
