On May 18, 2025, Burkina Faso paid tribute to Ghana’s former President Jerry John Rawlings by naming a new avenue in Ouagadougou after him. The dedication coincided with the inauguration of the Thomas Sankara Mausoleum, celebrating the enduring friendship between Rawlings and Sankara.
The newly named avenue located in the Dassasgho district, runs along the west side of the National Museum wall and connects to Boulevard Capitaine Isidore Noël Thomas Sankara. Minister of Communications Gilbert Pingdwendé Ouédraogo, representing the Prime Minister, stated, “Ouagadougou is proud to dedicate one of its avenues to President John Jerry Rawlings, who was a major player in the strong friendship that unites Burkina Faso and Ghana.”
This gesture acknowledges Rawlings’ support for Sankara and his contributions to African unity. The avenue’s naming reflects Burkina Faso’s commitment to honoring leaders who have championed the continent’s emancipation and solidarity.
