The Ashanti regional directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has met with district Early Childhood Education (ECE) Coordinators within the region to discuss progress, share best practices, and address challenges in their respective districts.
The meeting which lasted close to six (6) hours, held at the regional education office in Kumasi began at 9:10 AM and ended at 3:00 PM. It provided a platform for coordinators to socialize and share innovative strategies being implemented in their respective districts.








In his address, the Deputy Regional Education Director, Mr. Thomas Boateng emphasized the crucial role played by KG teachers in nurturing talents at a rather core stage of every child’s development.





He charged the ECE Coordinators not to be “arm chair officers but rather make field visitations a regular part of their work. He advised the District Officers to offer occasional training and support to early childhood teachers to be abreast with new trends in line with national policies.
The Coordinators shared some of the challenges they face in their respective districts. Mr. Boateng encouraged them to do their best to help the service grow.
















A key activity of the engagement was the development of Action Plan for 2025. Some of the key activities outlined for the year are:
- School and Circuit Reading Festivals – to be held in March
- District (Zonal) Reading Festivals – to take place in May
- Regional Grand Finale – First week of July
The reading festivals will focus on helping young learners to master the skill of:
✅ reading in English and Twi
✅ spelling in English and Twi
✅ forming words in English and Twi
Training on Kindergarten Assessment Tool
Madam Evelyn Kwarteng who is the Regional Early Childhood Coordinator took participants through the Kindergarten Assessment Tool, which evaluates learners based on four key learning areas:
📌 Language and Literacy
📌 Numeracy
📌 Creative Arts
📌 Our World Our People
She introduced the Coordinators to recommended assessment methods which includes: Observation, Checklist, Rating Scale, Rubrics, Portfolio, Anecdotal Records, and Reports. The assessment model adopted categorizes learners’ proficiency levels into Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Madam Kwarteng emphasized that this will ease stress on early grade teachers and bring more meaning to records they gather on learners’ performances.
The meeting reinforced the importance of continuous assessment and reading culture development among young learners.
The Regional Coordinator urged all participants to remain committed to improving early childhood education in Ashanti Region.
