The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has lifted the suspension of four Members of Parliament who were found in contempt of the House.
The MPs—Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli, and Jerry Ahmed Shaib—were suspended for two weeks following chaotic scenes during the vetting of ministerial nominees.
Speaker Bagbin announced the suspension on Friday, January 31, 2025, after a disorderly parliamentary session the previous day.
However, the Minority strongly opposed the decision, arguing that it was arbitrary and did not follow due parliamentary procedure. Clad in black with red armbands and headbands, they protested in Parliament, demanding a fair hearing for their colleagues.
Following an application from the Minority to reverse the suspension, the Majority later backed the request, leading the Speaker to lift the sanctions.
With this decision, the affected MPs can now fully resume their parliamentary duties.
