Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader for nearly four decades, has been confirmed dead following a joint U.S.–Israeli military strike, according to U.S. President Donald Trump.
Khamenei, 86, was reportedly killed during coordinated airstrikes on Saturday targeting key Iranian government and military installations. Iranian state television later confirmed his death.
In a statement posted on social media, President Trump described the operation as an act of justice.
“This is not only Justice for the people of Iran, but for all Great Americans, and those people from many Countries throughout the World, that have been killed or mutilated by Khamenei and his gang,” Trump wrote.
End of a 37-Year Rule
Khamenei had led Iran since 1989, succeeding Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic. Before becoming Supreme Leader, Khamenei served as Iran’s president from 1981 to 1989.
As Supreme Leader, he held ultimate authority over Iran’s military, judiciary, state broadcasting, and major political decisions. The position is effectively a lifetime role under Iran’s constitution.
Born in Mashhad, Iran, Khamenei rose to prominence during the 1979 Islamic Revolution that toppled the country’s last shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.
Escalating Conflict
His death comes amid heightened tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States. During the 2025 Iran–Israel conflict, Khamenei had publicly vowed that Iran would never surrender.
“War will be met with war, bombing with bombing, and strike with strike,” he said at the time.
The recent strikes mark one of the most dramatic escalations in Middle East geopolitics in decades.
