A fatal accident has occurred in Kumawu, the district capital of the Kumawu District, resulting in the loss of several lives and leaving others seriously injured. The tragic incident happened on Saturday, January 17, 2026, around the Abotanso station, near the Kumawu Central Mosque.
According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary reports, a construction truck transporting sand reportedly lost control and crashed into a hairdressing shop located by the roadside. The impact of the collision was devastating, leading to the instant death of four individuals who were believed to be either inside the shop or close to the premises at the time of the accident. Five other persons sustained critical injuries as a result of the crash.

Emergency responders including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Ambulance Service, and residents in the area quickly mobilised to rescue the victims from the scene. The injured were rushed to the Kumawu Hospital for urgent medical attention. Medical sources later confirmed that due to the severity of some of the injuries, some of the victims had been referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for advanced treatment.
The incident has thrown the entire Kumawu community into a state of shock and mourning. Many residents have expressed concern about road safety in the area, particularly the movement of heavy-duty trucks through populated sections of the town.

Following the tragedy, the Member of Parliament for Kumawu, Hon. Ernest Yaw Anim, and the District Chief Executive, Hon. Akwasi Amankwa, visited the affected area and the hospital to assess the situation. Both leaders expressed their deep condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery. Other local officials, traditional leaders, and community members have also extended messages of sympathy and support to the families who have lost their loved ones and those currently in critical condition.
Investigations are expected to be conducted by the relevant authorities to establish the cause of the accident and prevent future occurrences.
