John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has shockingly stated that when poverty increases in the lives of people, witchcraft suffers. This statement was made in response to a question asked during Mahama Encounter with the Media in the Upper East Region on Tuesday, August 7, 2024.
During the Mahama Media Encounter in the Upper East Region, a media personality posed a question to Mr. Mahama, stating that the safety of the elderly is in danger due to witchcraft accusations in the region. He further asked what Mahama would do if elected as president?
Mr. Mahama responded by making the remark that as poverty levels increase, witchcraft suffers. He asserted that there is no actual witchcraft associated with the elderly and that witchcraft accusations are based on superstition.
Mahama noted that the overall poverty rate in the economy is rising, particularly in the Northern corridors of the country. He pointed out that elderly mothers and fathers face the same challenges posed by increased poverty and, therefore, cannot possibly engage in harmful activities like those alleged in witchcraft accusations. He emphasized that no parent would resort to such actions as bewitching someone for not having children, or anything of the sort.
Mahama also mentioned that the Anti-Witchcraft Bill has been passed by Parliament but has not yet been assented to by President Akufo-Addo. He indicated that he is unaware of the reasons for the president’s delay in giving his assent but promised to investigate further.
Mahama assured the audience that if he is elected president, he will implement measures to alleviate the high poverty rate in the economy, especially in the Northern corridors of the country.
“We must eliminate the accusation of witchcraft in the country,” Mahama stated.
