Members of the University of Ghana Debate Society, who represented the university at the inaugural Commonwealth Universities Debate Championship (CUDC) at the University of Rwanda, have presented their awards to the Vice-Chancellor.
According to reports, out of the four teams that reached the finals, UG’s Team 1 and Team 2 secured 2nd and 3rd places, respectively. Additionally, the team earned several individual awards, including a certificate for the Best Female Speaker and a cash prize of $2000 for the group.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, expressed her admiration for the team’s accomplishments. She praised their exceptional ability to balance academic responsibilities with the development of other valuable skills, emphasizing that such versatility would set them apart in their future careers. Prof. Amfo highlighted the significance of their achievements, noting that excelling in both academics and extracurricular activities demonstrates a well-rounded and dynamic approach to education.
The delegation was led by the Acting Director of the UG Sports Directorate, Dr. Bella Bello Bitigu. Dr. Bitigu commended the debaters for their dedication and hard work, which brought honor not only to themselves but also to the University of Ghana. He underscored the importance of debate and other extracurricular activities in fostering critical thinking, public speaking, and leadership skills among students.
The debate society, through rigorous training and participation in various competitions, has consistently demonstrated excellence in articulating complex arguments and engaging in intellectual discourse. This latest achievement at the CUDC further solidifies their reputation as one of the top debate teams in the region.
Team members expressed their gratitude for the support they received from the university administration, faculty, and their peers. They acknowledged that the rigorous preparation and the collaborative effort were key factors in their success. The debaters also highlighted the invaluable experience gained from competing against teams from other Commonwealth universities, which provided them with a broader perspective on global issues and enhanced their debating skills.
