The Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has officially launched the second edition of the Democracy Cup, a football tournament aimed at promoting national unity and democratic values through sport.
The launch ceremony, held in Parliament on Thursday, July 24, sets the stage for an exciting showdown on Friday, 29th August, where Ghana Premier League giants Accra Hearts of Oak will face off against their fierce city rivals, Accra Great Olympics.
A curtain-raiser match will feature a friendly but symbolic encounter between Members of Parliament and members of the Judiciary, underscoring the spirit of collaboration and mutual respect among the country’s democratic institutions.
Speaking at the event, Speaker Bagbin described the Democracy Cup as more than just a football competition, highlighting its role in fostering national cohesion, civic engagement, and public participation in Ghana’s democratic journey.
“Football remains a powerful unifier. Through this competition, Parliament is using sport as a vehicle to deepen democratic awareness and strengthen the bonds that hold us together as a nation,” the Speaker noted.
