Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Reflects on a Life-Changing Chapter of His Journey

Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, opens up about his life journey in a deeply personal and inspiring reflection, sharing many experiences—including one especially life-touching moment.

In this episode, Dr. Amoakohene recounts a pivotal point in early 2016, when he stood at a complex intersection of purpose and ambition. He had just handed over the mantle as President of NAHSAG, completed his service as a member of the National Executive Committee of NUGS, and chaired the NUGS @ 50 Central Planning Committee—marking a historic Golden Jubilee for Ghana’s largest student movement.

According to him, that celebration stirred something profound within—a burning desire to lead once more. He revealed that this desire inspired him to contest for the highest office in the Ghanaian student front: President of NUGS.

“I had completed my first degree. I was not enrolled in any academic programme. The constitution was clear—no enrollment, no eligibility. And elections were set for September,” he recalled.

He faced a difficult decision: either enroll in a master’s programme in August, just in time to qualify—though that meant campaigning without legal backing until admission was confirmed—or choose to apply for GEMP, the Graduate Entry Medical Programme.

Then, suddenly in April, he gained admission into GEMP.

“At GEMP, I began to envision fulfilling a lifelong dream of becoming a medical doctor while also securing legitimate eligibility for the NUGS presidency,” he said.

But GEMP was no walk in the park. It was one of the most intense academic environments anyone could imagine. The science was layered. The expectations were high. The timetable was brutal.

“Now imagine preparing for national elections—a full campaign trail across campuses, public debates, strategy sessions, endless meetings—all while sitting in lecture halls trying to understand neuroanatomy and pharmacokinetics. It was a moment of shocking waves,” he stressed.

“Would I end up deferring the very programme I had fought so hard to enter? Would the campaign cost me my grades—or worse, my dream?”

Everyone around him had an opinion. Some said it was madness. Others called it destiny.

“I told no one, but I wrestled quietly. I prayed. I planned. I prepared,” said the Ashanti Regional Minister.

A decision was made in May; in June – the fire began to build; And by September…; The story will be continued
