President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to reintroducing the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) in schools across Ghana. He made this declaration during his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) at the Ghana Parliament House on Thursday, February 27, 2025.

In his address, President Mahama highlighted the indispensable role that PTAs and, by extension, parents play in the Ghanaian education system. He emphasized that their contributions are critical to shaping and enhancing the quality of education and should be given the necessary attention in school administration. According to him, active parental involvement will foster a more inclusive and supportive learning environment, ultimately benefiting students, teachers, and educational institutions.

The President further noted that the previous administration, under Nana Akufo-Addo, failed to prioritize the significance of PTAs in the educational sector. He asserted that their role was largely diminished, which had adverse effects on the effective governance and support systems within schools. President Mahama stressed that reinstating PTAs would not only bridge the gap between parents and educators but also facilitate better communication, cooperation, and collective decision-making in matters concerning education.

Highlighting the importance of stakeholder engagement in the education sector, President Mahama called on parents, teachers, and school administrators to embrace the initiative wholeheartedly. He assured the nation that his administration would put in place the necessary frameworks to ensure the successful reintegration of PTAs into the school system.

The reintroduction of PTAs is expected to improve accountability, promote infrastructure development through voluntary contributions, and enhance the overall learning experience for students. The President reiterated his belief that education should be a shared responsibility and that active parental involvement is vital in shaping the future of Ghana’s youth.
