People who practice sologamy are also called an autogamists which is the act of marrying oneself. Critics have argued that this practice lacks legal recognition as compared to traditional marriages.

If you ever attended a ceremony for self-marriage, you would find that it resembles traditional weddings, complete with guests, a cake, and a reception. Some self-marriage programs offer guidance and support to individuals before they embark on this unusual journey.

In recent years, self-marriages have gained popularity, particularly among rich women in the 21st century.

Interestingly there is a travel agency in Kyoto which now offers self-marriage packages, attracting clients who include dissatisfied brides seeking a second chance at the wedding experience.

Popular case of sologamy that have made headlines include a British photographer’s self-marriage in 2014 and an Italian fitness trainer’s in 2017.

In June 2022, Kshama Bindu, an Indian woman from Gujarat, made waves by marrying herself in a ceremony that adhered to traditional Hindu customs. This was recorded as India’s first ever case of sologamy. Bindu, who identifies as bisexual, expressed that she had always dreamed of being a bride but never wanted to be a wife.
