President John Dramani Mahama has instructed all government appointees to contribute one month’s salary to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, known as Mahama Cares.
The directive, announced on Monday, forms part of efforts to boost support for Ghanaians suffering from chronic illnesses such as kidney failure, cancer, and heart disease.
President Mahama, who has already pledged six months of his salary to the fund, said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to social equity and responsible governance.
“This is a moment for us to show compassion and leadership. I urge all appointees to support this fund, which will directly help save lives,” he said.
In addition, appointees who failed to declare their assets by the 31st March deadline will forfeit three months’ salary, which will also be donated to the health fund. Those who do not comply with the asset declaration requirement by 7th May face dismissal.
The Mahama Cares initiative was launched in April to provide financial assistance to people unable to afford treatment for life-threatening conditions not fully covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme.
President Mahama has also called on businesses and corporate organisations to contribute voluntarily to the fund as part of their social responsibility.
