President Mahama Appoints Acting Ministers Following Obuasi Helicopter Tragedy

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah to serve as acting ministers in response to the recent tragic loss of two cabinet members in a Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crash near Adansi Akrofuom.

Dr. Ato Forson, who currently serves as Minister for Finance, has been designated as Acting Minister for Defence, while Hon. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, will assume additional responsibility as Acting Minister for Environment.

These temporary appointments come after the untimely passing of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who were among the eight individuals confirmed dead in the military helicopter incident on Wednesday, August 6.

In announcing the appointments, President Mahama emphasised the need to maintain continuity in critical government functions during this period of national mourning. He expressed confidence in the capabilities of both acting ministers to uphold the responsibilities entrusted to them.

The President has suspended all official engagements for the remainder of the week and has declared three days of national mourning beginning Thursday, 7th August 2025. Flags across the country are to be flown at half-mast in honour of the departed statesmen.

The mortal remains of the deceased arrived in Accra last night under heavy security and were received with solemn military honours.

Ghanaians from all walks of life continue to mourn the loss of the ministers and other distinguished citizens who perished, reflecting on their service and contributions to national development.
