The National Communications Authority (NCA) has directed 62 radio stations across Ghana to suspend operations with immediate effect. The directive follows a recent compliance audit which revealed widespread regulatory breaches, including operating with expired authorisations and failing to meet technical and reporting obligations.
According to the NCA, the affected stations were given ample time and reminders to regularise their operations, but failed to take the necessary steps to renew their licences or comply with the Authority’s guidelines. The move, the NCA explained, is part of a broader effort to ensure the responsible use of Ghana’s broadcasting spectrum and to uphold standards in the media space.
“These infractions, if left unchecked, risk undermining the integrity of the country’s communications ecosystem,” the Authority stated. “We are committed to sanitising the airwaves to ensure that all broadcasters operate fairly, transparently, and in accordance with the law.”
The NCA has yet to publicly release the names of all affected stations, it is encouraging other operators to verify the status of their authorisations and address any outstanding compliance issues to avoid similar sanctions.
The Authority emphazised that the airwaves are national asset and must be used responsibly in the interest of the public.
