President John Dramani Mahama has fulfilled a strong campaign promise by allocating GH₵100 million in the 2025 national budget to provide monthly allowances for Assembly Members across the country. This major development marks a significant step toward strengthening local governance and deepening decentralization in Ghana.
During his State of the Nation Address in March 2025, President Mahama emphasized that Assembly Members play a vital role in community leadership and development, and it was time they received the financial recognition and support they deserve. The announcement has been met with widespread praise. Mr. Divine Ferg Afedo, a former Assembly Member for Ho Central in the Volta Region expressed gratitude and noted that the allowances will serve as much needed motivation for members who have long served without compensation.
The Coalition of District Assembly Members (CODAM) also endorsed the move, recalling how President Mahama’s past administration had supported them with essential logistics like motorbikes to enhance mobility and efficiency. In addition to allowances, President Mahama has pledged to increase the District Assemblies Common Fund from 5% to 7% and he pledged to ensure timely disbursements to support local development initiatives.
Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Minister has further pledged to use social media to promote accountability, transparency, and citizen engagement at the regional level which is also another evidence to the administration’s commitment to grassroots empowerment.
