In the cultural heartbeat of Kumasi sits an aircraft silent, still, and unexpectedly powerful.
It’s not flying. In fact, it hasn’t moved in years. But it’s not forgotten either. At the Kumasi Cultural Centre, this old stationary airplane has become something else entirely: a tourist magnet, a landmark, and a symbol of creative preservation. During a recent visit by cultural advocate Mr. Boakye Amponsah better known as ‘OgaLee’s eyes was caught by a grounded artifact and for good reason.
At first glance, it looks out of place as it was surrounded by ancient art, statues, and traditional Ashanti artifacts. But when you look closer one could realize it fits perfectly into the theme of memory and transformation. Just like the Centre’s centuries old traditions, this aircraft represents a piece of Ghana’s layered history. We don’t often associate aircraft with culture but here it’s looks different. The plane now non operational has been adorned and repurposed as an artistic and historical installation. It captures the imagination of tourists, school children, and locals visit.
People pose in front of it as Kids climb its steps. Elders tell stories of a time when air travel in Ghana was still a novelty. It’s no longer about the engine or the altitude rather about it’s presence. This aircraft in its quiet stillness does something profound by connecting generations. It reminds us that every object has a story even when it stops working the way it was designed to. Just like old drums, ancient stools, and kente looms, this aircraft now lives in a new form as a symbol of Ghana’s ability to honor the past, even when grounded.
So next time you walk through the Kumasi Cultural Centre, look past the carvings and fabrics. There, among trees and statues, you’ll find a plane that doesn’t fly but still lifts spirits.
