The leadership of Road Transport Operators Ghana urges commuters to ignore any purported increase in transport fares. In a statement issued by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), it has been brought to their attention that certain drivers have unilaterally raised transport fares, violating the Administrative Instrument governing the review of public transport fares in the country. Such actions are deemed illegal and must cease immediately if proven true.
As leaders, we have closely monitored the recent adjustments in fuel prices and other associated operational costs. Assuring our members, we are currently in discussions with stakeholders to consider various cost components and reach a mutual agreement on the way forward. A meeting was held with the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday, April 10th, 2024, during which our demands were presented. Once consensus is achieved, the general public will be duly informed.
Therefore, any fare increase outside the parameters set by the Administrative Instrument should be disregarded and viewed with disdain. We implore commuters not to acquiesce to any fares beyond the existing ones. Through this statement, we call upon Regional Administrations, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, as well as Station Welfare Committees, to enforce compliance with existing fares, as no decision has been made regarding any fare adjustments.
We urge all drivers to adhere to this directive and place their trust in the leadership’s guidance, stated by the Road Transport Operators .
