Teachers under the Ghana Education Service (GES) are entitled to various types of leave to support their personal, medical, and professional needs. Understanding the procedures for applying for these leave types is essential to ensure a smooth and approved absence from duty. This guide outlines the different types of leave available and the steps to follow when applying

Application Procedures and Guidelines for GES Leave

To ensure a smooth process, teachers must adhere strictly to the guidelines:

a. Casual/Emergency Leave

  • Must not exceed 10 working days in a calendar year.
  • Application should be made at least 7 days in advance.
  • Approved by the headteacher or District Director, depending on length.

b. Sick Leave

  • Submit a valid medical report or excuse duty form.
  • Any absence beyond 3 days must be reported to the District Director.
  • For prolonged illness, GES Medical Board approval may be required.

c. Maternity and Paternity Leave

  • Maternity: 12 weeks from the due date with medical certification.
  • Paternity: 5 working days, with birth certificate or proof of delivery.

d. Study Leave With Pay

  • Must have served for a minimum of 3 years (without prior study leave).
  • Must be on an approved GES list of programmes and institutions.
  • Recommendation by District Director and approved by GES Headquarters.
  • Must sign a bond to return to duty after studies.

e. Leave of Absence Without Pay

  • Written application explaining reason and duration.
  • Approval from GES Headquarters through Regional and District levels.

Responsibilities of Headteachers

  • Ensure proper documentation of leave in the teacher’s personal file.
  • Ensure continuity of teaching and learning during teacher’s absence.
  • Avoid conflict of interest or favoritism in approving leave.
  • Notify the next level in the GES structure when approving extended or special leave.

(This must be done in consultation with the MMDs Director of Education).

Consequences of Breaching Leave Guidelines

  • Taking leave without approval may result in sanctions, including salary suspension or dismissal.
  • Abandonment of post is taken seriously and can lead to termination of appointment.
  • Falsification of medical or academic documents could attracts disciplinary action.
