In a decisive move to improve healthcare in northern Ghana, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has pledged full support to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH). The move follows a series of operational challenges the hospital has faced in recent years, including equipment malfunctions and resource constraints.
Tamale Teaching Hospital, which serves as a key referral center for five regions, has battled with several issues. In July 2024, a breakdown in the hospital’s oxygen plant led to a serious shortage, forcing the facility to source oxygen from other regions. The hospital has also faced water shortages, unstable electricity, and mounting financial pressures, including costs tied to 13th-month salaries and staff accommodation.
In response, the Ministry of Health has introduced several interventions. In April 2024, four ambulances and a water tanker were handed over to improve emergency care and address water supply issues. Then in May 2024, the Finance Minister donated three dialysis machines and GH¢100,000 to help rehabilitate the hospital’s underground water system and expand renal care.
Minister Akandoh stressed the need for innovative resource mobilization, better data-driven planning, and stronger public-private partnerships. He believes these strategies will improve efficiency and ensure sustainability across Ghana’s health system.
These efforts reflect the government’s ongoing commitment to upgrading healthcare infrastructure and better equipping major health institutions like Tamale Teaching Hospital.
