Ghana’s National Chief Imam Mourns Pope Francis, Praises His Interfaith Legacy

Ghana’s National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has expressed deep sorrow following the death of Pope Francis, hailing the late pontiff as a global icon of peace, dialogue, and interfaith harmony.

In a statement issued through his Personal Assistant, Dr. Mohammed Marzuq Abubakari Azindoo, the Chief Imam extended condolences to the leadership of the Catholic Church both in Ghana and the Vatican. He described Pope Francis as a moral leader who tirelessly championed the rights of the poor and vulnerable and fostered understanding among people of different faiths.

“Pope Francis was a voice for the voiceless. He called for justice, inclusion, and compassion – even in his final days, urging an end to the bloodshed in Gaza,” the Chief Imam said.

The 105-year-old Islamic leader also acknowledged the Pope’s efforts to reconcile religious orthodoxy with modern human development, citing his commitment to climate justice and interfaith dialogue as enduring aspects of his legacy.

He praised the Pope’s work with the Abrahamic faiths, emphasizing that Francis’ papacy strengthened ties between Muslims and Christians around the world.

Sheikh Sharubutu also extended his good wishes to the Vatican ahead of the upcoming Papal Conclave, expressing hope that the next leader of the Catholic Church would continue in the footsteps of Pope Francis.
