The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has announced the suspension of its proposed 20% increase in public transport fares.
The decision, according to the Council, follows ongoing engagements with key stakeholders, including the government, transport operators, and consumer groups, to find a more balanced approach to addressing rising operational costs without placing additional strain on commuters.
The fare hike, which was initially scheduled to take effect on Friday, August 8 aimed at offsetting the impact of increases in fuel prices, spare parts, and other operational expenses.
However, the GRTCC says it will hold off on implementing the increment while discussions continue.
The Council has urged the public to remain calm and assured transport operators that efforts are underway to secure measures that will support the industry in the face of economic pressures.
The Ministry of Transport is expected to provide an update on the outcome of the stakeholder consultations in the coming days.
