Ghanaian businessman and CEO of McDan Group, Dr. Daniel McKorley, has shared a thoughtful message for young people who dream of becoming great individuals in the future.
In his message, he indicated that it is all too common to see people in their 30s being overlooked in career and life conversations because of a silent assumption that by now, they should have everything figured out.
He emphasized that if you’re in your 30s – or approaching them – you need to understand that this is the decade when things start getting real. The dreams and experiments of your 20s have brought you this far, but now it’s time to sharpen your focus and take control.
Your 30s are about alignment – aligning your skills, career, relationships, and priorities with where you truly want to go. This is the time to cut away the parts of yourself that no longer serve you.
You can’t do everything. Stop trying to be everywhere or please everyone. According to Dr. McKorley, your 30s require intentionality, and in these key areas, consider the following:
- In your career: Double down on what works. This isn’t the time to hop aimlessly. Build depth and grow your value.
- In your relationships: Prioritize people who align with your values and contribute to your growth. Let go of toxic, energy-draining connections.
- In your habits: Discipline is non-negotiable now. Whether it’s finances, health, or personal development, the habits you solidify in your 30s will shape your 40s and beyond.
Dr. McKorley noted that your 30s are not about proving anything to anyone; it’s about building the version of yourself that will thrive long-term. Yes, you’ll feel pressure – to earn more, to “catch up,” to settle down. But don’t let societal noise rush your journey. Focus on your race, your goals, and what truly matters.
This is the period to build habits, master consistency, and lay a solid foundation for the life you desire. Work smart, stay grounded, and own your lane, Dr. McKorley concluded.
