The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has officially inaugurated a new Governing Council for the University for Development Studies (UDS), urging the 15-member team to embrace innovation and lead the university into a new era of academic relevance and infrastructural expansion.
The inauguration ceremony, held in Tamale, saw the swearing-in of Ambassador Abdulai Salifu as Chairman of the Council. The new Council is expected to oversee UDS’s strategic development, improve the quality of teaching and research, and ensure the institution continues to meet the socio-economic needs of Northern Ghana and the country at large.

In his address, Hon. Iddrisu commended UDS for its long-standing commitment to community-focused education, particularly through its Third Trimester Field Practical Programme (TTFPP), which sends students to rural communities to provide services and gain practical experience.
“UDS has been a pillar in Northern Ghana’s development through innovative programs like the TTFPP. This is the time to consolidate those gains and scale up through smart investments in infrastructure, digital learning, and academic excellence,” the Minister stated.
He encouraged the newly inaugurated Council to prioritize research, enhance academic output, and seek partnerships that align with national development goals.
Ambassador Abdulai Salifu, on behalf of the Council, pledged their readiness to work collaboratively with the university management, government, and development partners to uplift the university and deliver on its mandate.
The inauguration marks a renewed effort by the government to strengthen the governance structures of tertiary institutions and align them with Ghana’s broader education and development strategy.
