Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), attended the 60th Fetu Afahye festival held in Cape Coast, in the Central Region of Ghana. The annual festival, which celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Oguaa people, brought together a host of notable dignitaries and traditional leaders.
The event was graced by the presence of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene; Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, Omanhene of Oguaa (Cape Coast); Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, running mate to Dr. Bawumia; and several other key figures.
The atmosphere was vibrant, filled with music and rich cultural displays. The occasion held additional significance as it coincided with the 25th anniversary of the enstoolment of both Osabarima Kwesi Atta II and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The theme for the Fetu Afahye celebration was “Celebrating the City of Firsts: Our People, Our Culture.” Dr. Bawumia, in his speech, highlighted the importance of the theme, stressing that it speaks deeply with Ghana’s national identity. He emphasized that Cape Coast, known for being the city of many firsts in Ghana, has been instrumental in shaping the country’s history and cultural evolution.
Dr. Bawumia acknowledged that the Fetu Afahye festival, now in its 60th year, has become a symbol of unity, community bonding, and cultural expression. He remarked, “For six decades, the Fetu Afahye has united us, providing a platform for cultural expression and community bonding. As we celebrate this milestone, let us reaffirm our commitment to preserving our rich cultural heritage for generations to come.”
He further encouraged the gathering to continue working together for the development of Ghana, emphasizing that cultural pride and national unity are key to the country’s prosperity. “Let us continue to work together to build a prosperous and peaceful Ghana. It is possible,” Dr. Bawumia said, expressing his optimism for the future.
